“Freedom from Slavery” Celebration – September 8

“Freedom from Slavery” walking/driving tour of Sugar Mound/Mound City – NEW EVENT – 10am-2:30pm. Tours of 6 locations with living history, soul food and fun.

Tours start at each location every half hour: 10am, 10:30am, 11:00am, 11:30am, 1pm, 1:30pm. Lunch served from noon until 1pm. Dedication and recognition ceremony at 2:00pm.

Start at City Hall and old jail (1868), 318 Main Street, and then follow your own route to the following.

National Union Cemetery est. 1865, designated by President Abraham Lincoln. Listen for voices from the graves of pioneers.

Linn County Courthouse (1886), 300 Block, Main Street. Was this always the county seat for Linn County? Found out many facts about Linn County History.

Victorian Main Street (1860’s to present), 500 block Main Street. Echoes of the Civil War, opera house, early retail, churches and early residents will greet you on this one block walk.

Sacred Heart Church (1941), 700 Block, Main Street – Built as a shrine to the Blessed Sister Philippine Duchesne who worked with the Pottawatomie Indians in 1841.

Historic Park, 700 Main Street. Guided tours of the buildings are times past. Also, demonstrations of woodcarving, weaving, early games and crafts. Attend class in the one-room school house. See a working windmill and more!

Featured Attraction:

Sista’h Quachapele, professional performing artist will relate stories of the days of the Underground Railroad. Sista’h Quachapele is a recipient of a 2001 Kansas Arts Comission Grant and was featured in the Fall 2000 Kansas Heritage Magazine.

A catered Soul food lunch will be served at Noon at the park to pre-registered, pre-paid participants.

$2.00 per person
Maximum $10.00 per family
Children 6 and under free
